Save This Temple

This series has been an ongoing exploration of our internal biases of the subject of history, and specifically art history, and how society can mistreat certain groups, environments, and trends because of implicit bias toward Western cultures. The idea for this series came from the accidental fire of Notre Dame Cathedral in France, and peoples reactions to the damage. When past damages to the environment, sacred sites in the Middle East or Asia, and sacred sites in the Americas has not sparked the same media sensationalism. It made me think back to the very first art history classes I ever attended, and the noticeably absent diversity in both the class and the subject matter. Each piece is modeled after Medieval and Gothic paintings and frescoes, and while taking the form of white cultures in history, displaying scenes and social commentary from the destruction of other cultures.
